The Nations Most Haunted – Quarter of Brits seen a ghost in last year

October 29, 2008

Cottages4you News

Nearly half of the population communicate with spirits to get advice

We are a nation of Derek Acorah’s! 60 per cent of Brits believe in ghosts, despite only a quarter of us having actually seen one. A spooky survey of 1000 people, carried out by holiday company cottages4you, shows that ghosts intrigue rather than scare us with nearly two thirds actively seeking ghostly goings on.

The frightful findings show that 46 per cent of us even rely on supernatural sources to help with life decisions, with men twice as likely to be influenced by a Ouija board as women, who prefer the more interactive advice of tarot card readers and spiritualists.

And with Halloween falling in half term this year, one in ten families are planning a weekend break to spot some spooks , with cottages4you reporting an increase in bookings especially in the UK’s most spookiest towns including York and Edinburgh.

Women are the biggest believers (66 per cent) and it seems British spooks favour setting up home in the South West, which has seen the most ghostly goings on (30 per cent). Of those who have had an eerie experience, 70 per cent have seen something, while 17 per cent felt a strange presence and a handful claim to have smelt a ghost!

Dr. Ciaran O’Keeffe, parapsychologist and star of Living TV’s Most Haunted, said: “As a nation we are fascinated with searching out the supernatural. 72 per cent of people believe night is the optimum time to see ghosts, but whether this points to a peak in genuine ghostly activity or a time when people are most prone to misinterpretation, for example as a result of tiredness or poor lighting, is not clear.

“There is much debate on creating the perfect conditions for paranormal activity, but hopefully some tips will help maximise opportunities for sightings for budding Brit spook spotters!”

It appears the best place for spending Halloween this year is the North of England, where 55 per cent of the population will be celebrating by decorating pumpkins, watching scary films or attending Halloween parties. For those wanting to get the best treats, avoid the South East, where 30 per cent of people don’t agree with it and won’t be offering ghoulish goodies to trick or treaters.

Nick Rudge, vice president of cottages4you, said: “With over 9,000 properties, ranging from mysterious mansion houses, smugglers cottages and converted chapels, cottages4you has the perfect place to spend a spine-chilling short break and do a spot of ghost hunting!”

For more information on ghostly goings on or to book a haunted holiday, please visit www.cottages4you.co.uk or call 0845 268 1560.

Ciaran O’Keeffe has compiled his top five tips for spooky sightings:
1) Don’t get a good rest the night before
2) Believe that you will see a ghost
3) Make sure it is dark (turn off lights!)
4) Make sure location is remote
5) Choose a spooky place! (and learn all about its creepy history!)

Photo competition; August winners !

September 3, 2008

Sorry for the slight delay but here they are… the August winners of our blog photo competition!
Unfortunately we received fewer entries this month. Keep them coming for September !!
The quality was very high again and our jury had a tough time selecting the winners.

The jury responsible for selecting the winners:

  • Andrew Hill: Manager Online Services
  • Nigel Flory: Holiday Cottages Group Image Management
  • Wayne Dentith: Professional Photographer

The jury scored all entries on “Holiday Feel”, “Composition”, “Subject”, “Impact” and “Originality” with “Holiday Feel” and “Originality” being the main criteria.

So, here they are; the winners of the cottages4you iPod and the pictures that have a chance to win the grand prize (GBP 300 discount voucher) in December:

Nature: Yorkshire Fog by ‘Flossypops’

Andrew: A great ‘layered’ effect moving from the logs in the foreground to the tree line and eventually the sun. Superb composition and a great photo.

Wayne: Yorkshire Fog….. Absolutely agree that you can enjoy your holiday whatever the weather. I love the shapes, this photograph creates a mystical atmosphere.

Nigel:The Morning mist has yet to disappear as the sun is just about making an appearance here, the cut logs reach up and the faint trees complete this composition.
Great Image.

Action: Norm reaches the top; just… by Cecilia Bones

Andrew: This photo sums up a great holiday of fun and exploration. The sun’s out, the weather’s good – time to get out and explore on the bike. This snapshot captures the ‘rosy-glow’ and happiness that a day’s biking can give.

Wayne: A good action shot, I like the shadow of the bike and Norm’s beaming smile at the top of the hill.

Nigel: Outdoor pursuits like mountain biking bring lasting memories to holiday experiences, especially when you are the first to the top. Congrats.

Cottage Life: Room with a view by ‘FAL2008′

Andrew: A great photo – made even more impactful through the use of black and white and the framing effect of the window. Your eye cannot help but peer into the distance and wonder what else lies outside. And who could a resist waking up to a beautiful landscape everyday…

Wayne: Excellent composition with great depth, especially like the tonal range and textures in the “frame”

Nigel: Classic glorious wilderness shot framed by the derelict window. A photographers favourite trick but always effective. Well Done.

Congratulations you all ! We’ll get in touch with you today.

Staff Blog; Relaxing and Peaceful holiday in Northumberland

August 11, 2008

by Corinne Moore, Owner Services

“Northumberland, wild and untamed with so much to offer from Old Roman Forts, Castles, Walking and Wildlife to long sandy beaches.

I love Northumberland because of all the variety of attractions it has, for all ages.

I have stayed many times at a property called Oak Cottage ( ref:16498 ) on Whitelee Farm.
There are 3 holiday cottages on the farm, which enjoy panoramic views over Whitelee Fell, which has been designated a National Nature Reserve.

This is a truly unique place and the owner’s Mr & Mrs Wilson have done much to protect the local wildlife, and to make the farm a “Green” place to be, energy for the cottages is provided by a small wind turbine and solar panels. The farm has been awarded the Silver award from the “Green Tourism Scheme”.

Being keen on nature and walking, I love the many fabulous walks that are available from the front door. There are so many birds to watch from the surrounding farmland and in the cottage garden.

My favourite has to be the “Wildlife cameras” which feed live images into the cottages onto the TV. I have spent many a happy evening sipping my wine watching Badgers, Foxes, Owls, as well as a plethora of smaller birds and mammals on “Owl and Fox cam”

For all those who love to explore, the cottages is only 5 minutes from the Scottish border, Hadrian’s Wall, Edinburgh, the Northumberland Coast, all approx 1 hour away and half an hour away is Alnwick Castle and Gardens, where some of the Harry Potter scenes have been filmed, a must for all children and grown up Potter fans alike, followed by dinner in the Treehouse Restaurant is a must.

I would really recommend this area for people of all ages, families and couples and pets alike, especially for those who just want to relax and have some well deserved quiet time.”

Feel free to look at our wide range of holiday cottages in the UK in the Northumbria region.

We don’t expect it to be easy, in fact we expect it to be very difficult.
We will be unable to walk for a few days after the event, so please dig deep and sponsor us for this worthy cause!

Thanks,

Inter Site Football match a great success!

July 31, 2008

The Holiday Cottages Team still looking confident

By Nick Smith

On Saturday 27th the inaugural Kettering vs Earby football match took place in Skipton.
The newly formed Holiday Cottages team took to the field in a confident mood and, buoyed by a healthy home support, more than matched the more experienced Kettering side in the opening exchanges.
Kettering then took the lead which was cancelled out with a long range effort from A. Ahern, after which the experience of the Kettering showed as they stretched to a 5-2 lead at half time. (M. Aspinall with the Earby goal).

Eyes on the ball

All eyes on the ball

Inspired by some tactical substitution and a change of formation the 2nd half was much closer, especially as the pace slowed in some wonderful sunny weather. Another M. Aspinall goal meant the final score was 7-3 to Kettering, although the 2nd half was drawn one apiece.

After the match the newly commissioned trophy was presented to the victorious Kettering side as well as the man of the match awards. (M. Aspinall picking up the trophy for the Earby side).

The Kettering Team preparing for victory

The match was played in good spirit and all players involved thoroughly enjoyed the day, plans are already

underway for the return fixture in Kettering and a chance to re-capture the trophy and the glory for Holiday Cottages.
