Cottage of the week – The Old Methodist Chapel

Some cottages are quirky, containing heaps of character and charm. Some cottages on the other hand are classically charming, offering stunning architecture in an area of natural beauty. But sometimes we feature properties that combine both into one completely unique but undeniably attractive cottage. The Old Methodist Chapel in Rosedale Abbey, Yorkshire, is just one such property, combining beauty through its architecture and location while managing to defy convention at every turn.

Of course the main clue is in the name. The Old Methodist Chapel has been sympathetically converted to preserve most of its natural features while making sure that visitor comfort is top of the agenda. So while you may not still find congregations gathering outside on a Sunday morning, you’ll certainly find it worthy of praise.

The village of Rosedale Abbey has similar spiritual connections. The former site of a Cistercian Priory, all that’s left of the former nunnery is a staircase, a sundial and a single stone pillar. Thankfully the surrounding views of the Yorkshire Dales make up in eye-watering views what the village has lost in architectural heritage.

The wide-open moorland of the Yorkshire Dales stretches as far as the eye can see and contains a wealth of activities for guests at The Old Methodist Chapel. Try river-fishing, cycling, pony-trekking or 9-hole golf. Move further afield and you’ll find the coast is only a half hour drive away. And if you can’t decide between the seaside charms of Whitby and Scarborough, why not visit both?

With so many local attractions, you’ll be ready to relax in comfort and The Old Methodist Chapel is happy to oblige. With exposed beams, an open-fire and deep sofas, the living room seems tailor-made for comfort. Similarly the three double bedrooms and one twin allow for deep relaxation and blissful sleep. When you do manage to rise you’ll find the kitchen diner makes for a great place to meet up with your other guests (the property sleeps up to 8).
