Get planning now for the Windermere Airshow

June 28, 2010

When you think of holidays in the Lake District, one of the most famous places that springs to mind is likely to be Lake Windermere.

England’s largest natural lake really is as beautiful as people say it is and you should make time to visit it on your next trip.

The area is also host to many events held throughout the year and in July there’s one not to miss.

Held on July 24th and 25th, the tenth anniversary of the Windermere Airshow sounds like it’ll be a real treat for the whole family.

With aerial acrobatics and incredible displays, the show is sure to be a day out to remember.

Clive Langley, public relations officer for the event, says: "Arrive early, buy a programme to plan what to do, see as much as possible of the ground events [and] see helicopters and military villages."

And the kids can have a go on a 30-minute fun cycle course, with bicycles provided free of charge.

Don’t miss your chance to enjoy this incredible event – get planning your Lake District holiday now.

Holidays in Portugal could be cheaper than you think

June 24, 2010

Here at cottages4you we’re always looking for ways to spend less on your holidays to Portugal and other great destinations, while still getting the most value from your trip.

There are plenty of ways to do this and sometimes the activities that cost nothing at all are the ones you enjoy the most.

Eating out and travelling around can see your expenditure rise, but this summer could be different.

According to Sarah Munro, head of Travel Money at the Post Office: "Those planning a trip to the Algarve or Costa del Sol this summer may find their pounds stretch further than they expected."

This is because living costs in Portugal and Spain have decreased by a massive 40 per cent since last year, she explains.

Why not make the most of this drop and book a stay in a holiday cottage in one of these fantastic destinations?

You could even come back to Blighty with money to spare, thanks to a stronger sterling.

The Post Office Travel Money Monitor: January-May 2010 recently found sterling gained ten per cent since March and is at its highest level for 18 months.

What are you waiting for?

Have a whale of a time in Dorset

June 24, 2010

If you’ve ever been on holiday to Dorset, you’ll be well aware of the area’s heritage when it comes to incredible wildlife.

But did you know there are dolphins and whales swimming just off the Dorset coastline that you can see right in front of you?

Sea Watch has revealed there are plenty of the creatures around and the charity – which aims to protect and conserve whale and dolphin populations – needs your help in spotting them.

If you and your family are heading to the beach on your Dorset holiday you might be able to spare a minute or two to observe the waters and help the National Whale and Dophin Watch.

Gemma Veneruso, sightings officer for Sea Watch, told the BBC: "Any time that volunteers can spare would be appreciated. We have some observers who do watches all day, every day and others who do one two-hour watch and it is all beneficial."

It sounds like a great idea to us and your family could make a day of it – just be sure to take your camera along and record any sightings for your scrapbook.

Jackie’s final Cycle Fest training diary

June 24, 2010

The last week or so has been a bit of a blur with bike and work training
so here’s my last blog….

As I write this there’s just 2 more sleeps to go……
My belly does somersaults at the thought of Saturday, I have visions of
my legs being so wobbly that I won’t be able to set off or get off when
I’m on it!!!!

Been doing lots of 10/15 mile bike rides, making sure there are plenty
of hills, not pushed myself too much as I’ve read what the pros do to
prepare.  Everyone is offering advice, my friend Faulky has given me a
gel pack and glucose sachet to mix with my drink for when I ‘bonk’???
(cycling term)!!  My husband Mark is also doing the ride with his
company ‘Hope’ so he’s constantly telling me what to do/not to do, he
knows I am so competitive that I’m at risk of starting too hard so that
I’ll have an empty tank at the end.

Do I stay in the saddle to go up a hill or stand up? Eat pasta the night
before, have a Guinness as well, try and eat something first thing, eat
every 20 minutes on the ride??

Do I wear shorts with or without,  trainers or cycling shoes – I have
decided definitely trainers as those of you who know me know how clumsy
I am, I can’t get my head round the quick release action of the shoes
and don’t want to cause a pile up!

We’ve all had lots of support from family, friends and colleagues, I am
sure everyone will be glad when it’s over but if one more person asks me
if I’m doing the ‘long’ or ‘short’ option I may swing for them – what’s
short about 50 miles of climbing steep, windy roads???  If you think
it’s short get your bike out and join us!!!
Still waiting for offers from volunteers to push me up the last hill,
you can email/text me or just be there on the day!

Yesterday I was told to expect temperatures of 30, today the BBC said highs of 22 with sunny
intervals…wind 6mph, so that’s ok’ish.  My mum has suggested I take a
little bag with a sponge in to keep myself cool…

Thanks to everyone who has sponsored us and offered words of
encouragement – why didn’t you try and talk me out of it??  No seriously
I have started a hobby I will keep going for a long time, hopefully. A
very big thank you again to Hope and Ian for my fantastic bike and to
Angelene for the 4 pack of ‘Pepperoni’ to enjoy with my curry Saturday
evening!!!  I will be thinking of you too x

Good luck to everyone and remember if you have to go up a hill – you’ll
be able to enjoy the descent – but think of what’s happened to Sir Steve
Redgrave and don’t go too fast!  It’s a ride not a race.
(and Duffy – I have tried to check for spellings/grammar!!)

Jackie is training for the National Cyclo-Sportive at Saturday’s Pendle Cycle Festival. Find more info on the event website.

Good luck to Jackie, the cottages4you team and all the other entrants.

Delve into history at Coniston

June 24, 2010

A holiday in the Lake District is a good chance for your kids to relax over the summer break and for the whole family to bond.

School might be out, but there’s no reason why your children should stop learning and absorbing information (just don’t tell them we said so!).

A great way to keep their brains active is to head to an exhibition held in Coniston, which reveals some 12,000 years of human history and an insight into the national park’s past.

Entitled ‘Unlocking the past, understanding the present’, the event is touring the country and will be at the John Ruskin Museum over the summer.

Lake District National Park archaeology and heritage advisor Eleanor Kingston says: "The exhibition introduces archaeology in a fun, hands-on way. Visitors can enjoy interactive experiences and see interesting objects at close quarters."

The cottages4you team think youngsters will just love handing the real artefacts and uncovering some historical treasures.

And the museum also hosts some exciting guided walks, which could be a fun way to explore the area once you’ve learnt more about it.

Pedal power for Peak District

June 24, 2010

Holidays in the Peak District are ideal for those who like to stay active while on a break from work.

A great way to do this – and explore the beautiful scenery at the same time – is to get on your bike.

Cycling around the area is such an enjoyable way to see the sights and stay healthy on your holiday.

The National Park Authority has set up Pedal Peak District to get more of you involved with this fun activity and it’s joined forces with Facebook, Twitter and YouTube to pass on the message.

Communications officer Alison Riley says: “We hope that people will be keen to share their experiences of cycling in the Peak District and spread the word about the joys and benefits of cycling in the national park.”

Why not get the whole family involved and spend a day out on two wheels? You could take a picnic along and stop at a spot like Ladybower Reservoir and enjoy the views this picturesque location has to offer.

Don’t forget that the Pendle Cycle Show, National Cyclo-Sportive and National Elite Road Race will be taking place this weekend (26-27 June) at the cottages4you sponsored Pendle Cycle Fest. Find more info on the event website.

Escape to…the curious garden

June 23, 2010

Driving up to Le Potager d’un curieux, the first thing you see is a giant pile of stones crowned by an old television set – the first indication that perhaps this garden is a bit more than a few tomato plants and a rose bush or two. Once you meet the owner, Jean-Luc Danneyrolles, the television set starts to make a bit more sense – there is no doubt that you are in the company of a man who marches to the beat of his own drummer.

Le Potager d’un curieux, in the Provençal countryside near Apt, is an extraordinary place – intriguing, disconcerting, inspiring – reflecting the personality of its owner. Jean-Luc has a freedom, even wildness, in his spirit that comes out through his garden and they are in perfect sync.

Potager means kitchen or vegetable garden and Jean-Luc has, over the past 20-some years, created a place where ancient or forgotten plant varieties are resurrected, nurtured and encouraged to flourish in soil that hasn’t seen a drop of chemical pesticides or fertilisers. When asked what he uses to ward off disease in his crops, his look is almost blank, as if he doesn’t understand the question. ‘Rien,’ he shrugs. ‘Nothing’. He believes that trying to prevent or cure his plants’ diseases weakens them and makes them fragile so they have to fight the disease themselves, just like in the wild – a French gardener’s equivalent of tough love. The fact that his seemingly endless acres of crops are flourishing makes me think he’s on to something.

When we visited him, one of his students was stirring a bubbling pot of the latest crop of strawberries on an old stove in his workshop (he was making jam). All around the place are great chandeliers of dried plants, surreal mobiles made of hollowed-out gourds and cages filled with long fingers of desiccated beanpods. The doors are collaged with newspaper photographs and headlines with writing scribbled and painted over them.

Throughout the grounds, strange sculptures are half hidden as the vegetation embrace them, giving them an almost subliminal quality. It’s only once you’ve walked past them that they creep into your peripheral vision. Handwritten plant plaques to identify the beds are solid wooden squares painted in cobalt blues, fire-engine reds, lemon yellows, splashing primary colours throughout the spring planting and gently weathering to more subtle shades as the plants grow and paint the garden from their own palette.

Jean-Luc is a great gardener philosopher – he has written a number of books on creating potagers and growing individual vegetables, such as tomatoes – his garden has about 50 different varieties of tomatoes, most of them forgotten by industrial agriculture but sought after by Michelin star chefs – but he says that he doesn’t have time to publish these days as he is writing his book on the land. The furrows between the rows are the pages of his book, the plants are his words, the beds his ideas. If you’re in the area this summer, visit this beautiful tome …

Le Potager d’un curieux, La Moliere, 84400 Saignon. Tel: 33 (0)4.90.74.44.68; lepotager@wanadoo.fr. Visitors are welcome during the summer months. Plants and seeds are also for sale.

Sip on a Loire Valley wine at Anjou Festival

June 23, 2010

Wine lovers heading to France for their summer holidays are in for a real treat with some truly delicious tipples on offer.

Regions such as Bordeaux are well known for their grape varieties across the globe.

But you might like to try something different and sample Loire Valley wines, as these are "easy to drink and relatively light", according to an expert.

Amanda Gallou from Amanda’s Wines – a firm that imports the drink from this region – says the white wines are unoaked and this gives them the delicious light quality.

"The Sauvignon Blanc is one of the main grape varieties," she explains, but there’s plenty more to choose from.

If you’re passing through the Loire Valley in June or July, you should definitely check out the Anjou Festival.

Running from June 17th to July 10th, the country’s second-largest theatre festival is sure to be entertaining and you could even pick up a bottle or two while you’re there.

Cottage of the week – Lane Side

June 23, 2010

Our new cottage of the week is perfect for those looking to attend the cottages4you sponsored Pendle Cycle Festival this weekend (26-27 June 2010). Lane Side in Salterforth is ideally suited to larger parties (10–11) looking to get a great view of Saturday’s National Cyclo-sportive event and Sunday’s pro-filled National Road Race Championships, which will also be screened on Eurosport TV.

With an abundance of natural beauty surrounding the property, Lane Side is equally suited to those with an appreciation of unspoiled nature and an enjoyment of blissful tranquillity. We are aware that this doesn’t really limit the appeal of the property, so if you’re looking to enjoy a break then you should probably make your booking as soon as possible!

But not all of the beauty surrounding the property is on the outside. Once you witness the spacious, open-plan ground floor and the sympathetic conversion work that’s been made to the former barn, you’d be forgiven for closing the door and not wanting to go outside for the duration of your break.

To stay inside however would be to miss out on a whole range of attractions – and not just the UK’s top cycle races. With the Leeds and Liverpool canal towpath close by, not to mention the popular Pennine Way, walkers and heritage lovers will find plenty to keep themselves occupied. Likewise nearby Skipton and the Trough of Bowland offer incredible scenery and an enviable opportunity to kick back and soak up the beauty of the region.

To check availability and find out more info please visit Lane Side’s listing on the cottages4you website.

See the sights at Elkstone Village Open Gardens Day

June 22, 2010

Cotswolds holidays are just perfect for those of you who love to explore the great outdoors and see the typically English countryside.

Here at cottages4you we love to have a good old nose around people’s gardens, so the Elkstone Village Open Gardens Day sounds right up our street.

Lucky visitors to the event – held on June 27th – will get a unique chance to explore some of the village’s prettiest private gardens.

You might even learn a trick or two to take home with you!

If you’re feeling truly adventurous, you can enjoy a tractor hay ride that takes you on a tour of the surrounding countryside.

Those who prefer to sit back and relax could sample the cream teas and homemade cakes at the stalls throughout the village.

Forecasters predict the warm weather much of the UK is seeing at the moment will continue over the weekend, so let’s hope the sun shines on Elkstone on Sunday!
