Recession “has increased popularity of local Cotswolds produce”

December 1, 2009

The recession has prompted an increase in the amount of people purchasing local produce in the Cotswolds, it has been suggested.

According to the Wilts and Gloucestershire Standard, Stow Farmer’s Market has seen sales climb despite the economic downturn, with some stallholders reporting a 30 per cent increase in trade when compared to figures from 2008.

A range of meats, cheeses, wines, vegetables and pastries produced at farms from around the area goes on sale on the second Thursday of every month in the town, meaning it may be an ideal place for those staying in Cotswolds holiday cottages near the area to stock up on local produce.

Gerb Gerbrand told the news source that people seem to be “choosing to buy more locally” where possible.

“We have found out that people are thinking more about where they are buying their food,” he stated.

Earlier this month, Cotswolds butcher Martin’s Meats picked up five accolades at the 2009 year’s Taste of the West Awards, according to the Tewkesbury Admag.

Northumberland home to “delightful” walks

December 1, 2009

A visitor to Northumberland has praised the walking opportunities that are available in the county.

Writing for MercuryNews.com, Marta Yamamoto described taking a trip on foot in the area as being a “delightful experience”, be it along the shore or inland.

She noted that there are some parts of the landscape where the number of people are outnumbered by the quantity of sheep and cows, while inland “picturesque” waterways and “broad panoramic vistas” can be seen.

“My favourites were the coastal walks, where I gazed at the endless sea and ever-changing sky,” she told the news source adding, that St. Cuthbert’s Cave – found in the village of Belford – was a great place to stop for lunch an explore a “hidden valley” featuring sandstone formations covered in pink and purple heather.

A growing number of tourists may be heading to stay in Northumberland holiday cottages in the future, after the region”s tourism body announced it is launching a new identity to help attract visitors.
