“Chaotic” entertainment for visitors to the Lakes

August 12, 2009

Those embarking on holidays in the Lake District later this month will have the opportunity to take part in an afternoon of madness and eccentricity as The Cabaret of Dr Caligari hits the national park.

The street art show, being produced by Artizani, will run between 14:00 and 17:00 BST on the week starting Monday August 24th and offers its audience three hours of cabaret entertainment.

Describing the performance, an advert for the free event on Lakes Alive states: "Oddities, eccentrics and acrobats are conjured out of thin air to entertain, but once out of the box they refuse to disappear."

Dr Caligari will be at Broadgate Meadow, Grasmere on the Monday, with the tour heading off to Ford Park in Ulverston, Rothay Park in Ambleside, Bitts Park in Carlisle and Brockhole Lake District Visitor Centre near Windermere respectively on the other days of the week.

Another free event available to those staying in holiday homes in the Lake District this month is the tenth birthday celebrations of Theatre by the Lake in Keswick, which will take place on August 19th at 10:30 BST.

Olympic sailing teams to train in Dorset

August 12, 2009

Holiday cottages in Dorset lovers may not be the only people visiting the south-west county in the coming years as the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA) has opened its doors to international teams looking to train in the run-up to the 2012 Olympic Games.

The WPNSA, which will host the sailing events during the London Olympiad, is inviting competitors to use its facilities and is offering one-year and three-year packages to interested parties that will be tailored to team sizes.

John Tweed, the academy”s chief executive, commented: "The international team training access is positive for the WPNSA and will complement the venue”s existing commitment as a water sports facility with local and global appeal."

The WPNSA, which was funded by the National Lottery and the South West Regional Development Agency, was set up to contribute to economic regeneration in Dorset, as well as provide facilities for the local community and promote sailing to people of all abilities.

Holiday plans ”changing” as Brits stay in the UK

August 12, 2009

Taking holidays in the UK is one of the ways in which Britons are attempting to cut back during the recession, it has been suggested.

With unemployment figures having risen as a result of the economic downturn, expert at Travelsupermarket.com Bob Atkinson explained that many people are choosing not to head abroad.

Those who still have jobs are also looking to cut back, he said, prompting some to consider staying closer to home.

“There are a significant number of people travelling in the UK and their holiday plans may have changed to stay here rather than going overseas,” Mr Atkinson remarked.

Cornwall holiday cottages could prove to be more popular as a result, with recent research from the Association of Independent Tour Operators showing that half of people intend to take a one or two-week break within the UK this year.

The research also revealed that 72 per cent of people plan on spending at least as much money on holidays as they did in 2008, despite the current economic climate.

Lake District theatre celebrates ten years

August 11, 2009

Those planning holidays in the Lake District this month have been invited to join in the celebrations of its renowned theatre.

Next Wednesday (August 19th) marks the tenth anniversary of the first performance at Theatre by the Lake.

And the venue, situated in Keswick, is holding a public launch to announce details of its plans for the spring 2010 production.

The free event begins at 10:30 BST and will also include the unveiling of the theatre”s tenth anniversary book, while those on holidays in the Lake District will find that birthday cake is provided.

Artistic director Ian Forrest explained that it will provide an opportunity to thank the audiences, volunteers and friends of the theatre for support over the last decade.

"I do hope as many people as possible will come along to the launch to celebrate our birthday and to find out about what we have in store as we move into the next ten years," he said.

The venue was officially opened by Dame Judi Dench and Michael Williams in December 1999, although its first production began on August 19th of that year.

High-speed rail opportunities ”benefiting more Brits”

August 11, 2009

Residents of more than 200 cities and towns in the UK are now able to access Europe via high-speed rail services, it has been announced.

Eurostar revealed that it has signed a joint-ticketing deal with South West Trains, meaning more people can take advantage of through fares.

The move could benefit those planning trips to holiday homes in Brittany and elsewhere in France, while the firm suggested that choosing rail over short-haul flights can benefit the environment.

Commercial director at Eurostar Nick Mercer added that high-speed services are "capturing the imagination", with convenience a key factor in this.

"With one booking you can travel from almost anywhere in Britain to hundreds of destinations on the other side of the Channel," he said.

Eurostar recently revealed that passenger numbers in the first half of the year were up four per cent compared to the same period in 2008 and chief executive Richard Brown cited "transparent prices" as one of the reasons for its popularity.

The 2009 Tour of Pendle, sponsored by cottages4you, took place on Sunday August 9th, starting and finishing in Nelson (Lancs).

The race was won with a lead of 40 seconds by Russell Downing.  Second place went to Chris Newton and third to Rob Partridge.  The bike race follows an undulating course through the hills and dips of Pendle and surrounding towns and villages. A key stage being the long, long climb of Blacko.  It was on the climbs that Downing believes he turned the race.

“I was confident to leave it to a sprint but you never know, anything could happen, so I wanted to hit them hard on that climb because I knew I was climbing well,” commented Downing.

“It’s quite a steep little climb with a few twists in it. It drags over the top and that’s where I got the distance. Partridge attacked first and softened it up brilliantly for me. Chris looked back and probably knew I was going to go but couldn’t do anything so I went and rode really hard.”

Nick Rudge, said of the event, “It was a privilege for cottages4you to sponsor this ‘premier league’ cycling event, and to welcome some of the country’s top riders on to our home turf. The local support on the day was fantastic….the glorious weather certainly helped.”

“Russ Downing, the winner, himself from just over the border in Yorkshire, was delighted to have won, and said it was a great run-up to the forthcoming Tour of Ireland where he will be competing against Lance Armstrong and Mark Cavendish, amongst others.”

Alternative events attracting British holidaymakers, study shows

August 10, 2009

People are increasingly choosing alternative events in order to experience different sides of British culture, it has been observed.

Research by thetrainline.com revealed that nearly half of Britons are considering attending such an occasion this summer, with a third believing them to offer good value.

Those planning trips to holiday cottages in the Lake District may be able to take in one such event, as a face pulling contest takes place in Cumbria.

Commenting on the trend, thetrainline.com spokesman Iain Hildreth remarked: "With Britons preparing to spend more time on home turf, finding something innovative and different to do with friends and family is essential for making the most of the British summer."

The portal suggested that although traditional events such as music festivals will remain popular, holidaymakers are keen to explore alternatives.

Last week, VisitEngland suggested that the chance to sample local food is one reason why many Brits are choosing to take holidays in the UK.

Holidaymakers urged to set a budget

August 10, 2009

Setting a budget is very important when planning a holiday, an expert has noted.

According to Sean Tipton, spokesperson for ABTA – The Travel Association, many Britons underestimate the amount they are likely to spend while away.

He was commenting after Visa Europe revealed that 39 per cent of people fork out more than they intend to while on holiday.

The findings could be of particular interest to those renting holiday cottages in Cornwall, as the research showed that 60 per cent of people are planning a beach trip this year.

Mr Tipton explained that those heading abroad are even more likely to overspend, as they do not realise how much they are likely to need.

He suggested that the "vast majority of us will underestimate" the amount of money that will be required, adding: "You”re on a budget, so you think you will get by on that, but very few will stick to it."

Holiday advice for motorists heading to France

August 10, 2009

Those heading on Brittany holidays via car this year should consider purchasing breakdown insurance before they go away.

This is the suggestion of Andrew Goodsell, executive chairman at Saga Services, whose company has revealed how expensive automobile repairs can be when in mainland Europe.

While on holiday in France, the price of having a broken down car recovered from a motorway and transported to the nearest garage is typically £125 during the week and this figure increases to £155 at weekends, the firm said.

Costs can run into the thousands when vehicles need to be repatriated to the UK.

Mr Goodsell commented: "When you add up the cost of calling out assistance and repairing your car, it really does make sense to take out breakdown cover."

At the start of this month, Saga also suggested that those staying in holiday homes in France consider travel insurance, as the European Health Insurance Card will only cover necessary treatment caused by illnesses or accidents.

Ryanair launches £1 seat sale

August 10, 2009

Those planning to rent holiday homes in Brittany may have been given a boost by the news that cheap flights are being made available by Ryanair.

More than one million seats costing £1 each have been released – with the price including all taxes and charges.

The airline travels from the UK to a range of destinations, including more than 20 in France.

As a result, those planning a visit to holiday cottages in Brittany could find that they have an affordable option for travel in October and November.

Ryanair spokesman Daniel de Carvalho explained that the sale will run until Thursday August 6th, adding: "Let the recession stay at home as you go for a sun tan! Book your seats today."

Two-thirds of respondents to a recent poll by the carrier said that they would stand on a one-hour flight if their fare was free, while 42 per cent said they would do so if they could pay half price.
