Those planning holidays in the Lake District this month have been invited to join in the celebrations of its renowned theatre.

Next Wednesday (August 19th) marks the tenth anniversary of the first performance at Theatre by the Lake.

And the venue, situated in Keswick, is holding a public launch to announce details of its plans for the spring 2010 production.

The free event begins at 10:30 BST and will also include the unveiling of the theatre”s tenth anniversary book, while those on holidays in the Lake District will find that birthday cake is provided.

Artistic director Ian Forrest explained that it will provide an opportunity to thank the audiences, volunteers and friends of the theatre for support over the last decade.

"I do hope as many people as possible will come along to the launch to celebrate our birthday and to find out about what we have in store as we move into the next ten years," he said.

High-speed rail opportunities ”benefiting more Brits”

August 11, 2009

Residents of more than 200 cities and towns in the UK are now able to access Europe via high-speed rail services, it has been announced.

Eurostar revealed that it has signed a joint-ticketing deal with South West Trains, meaning more people can take advantage of through fares.

The move could benefit those planning trips to holiday homes in Brittany and elsewhere in France, while the firm suggested that choosing rail over short-haul flights can benefit the environment.

Commercial director at Eurostar Nick Mercer added that high-speed services are "capturing the imagination", with convenience a key factor in this.

"With one booking you can travel from almost anywhere in Britain to hundreds of destinations on the other side of the Channel," he said.

Eurostar recently revealed that passenger numbers in the first half of the year were up four per cent compared to the same period in 2008 and chief executive Richard Brown cited "transparent prices" as one of the reasons for its popularity.

The 2009 Tour of Pendle, sponsored by cottages4you, took place on Sunday August 9th, starting and finishing in Nelson (Lancs).

The race was won with a lead of 40 seconds by Russell Downing.  Second place went to Chris Newton and third to Rob Partridge.  The bike race follows an undulating course through the hills and dips of Pendle and surrounding towns and villages. A key stage being the long, long climb of Blacko.  It was on the climbs that Downing believes he turned the race.

“I was confident to leave it to a sprint but you never know, anything could happen, so I wanted to hit them hard on that climb because I knew I was climbing well,” commented Downing.

“It’s quite a steep little climb with a few twists in it. It drags over the top and that’s where I got the distance. Partridge attacked first and softened it up brilliantly for me. Chris looked back and probably knew I was going to go but couldn’t do anything so I went and rode really hard.”

Nick Rudge, said of the event, “It was a privilege for cottages4you to sponsor this ‘premier league’ cycling event, and to welcome some of the country’s top riders on to our home turf. The local support on the day was fantastic….the glorious weather certainly helped.”

“Russ Downing, the winner, himself from just over the border in Yorkshire, was delighted to have won, and said it was a great run-up to the forthcoming Tour of Ireland where he will be competing against Lance Armstrong and Mark Cavendish, amongst others.”
