Lakes Aquarium welcomes new attractions

August 10, 2009

Insects have arrived at the Lakes Aquarium from Australia this month as part of a new exhibition exploring the ways in which creatures disguise themselves from predators.

Those visiting holiday cottages in the Lake District could pay a visit to the attraction on the shores of Lake Windermere to view the titan stick insects, which have already arrived in the UK.

Measuring up to 30cm in length, the giant brown/grey creepy crawlies will form part of the Camouflage show between August 29th and 31st.

They are also known as the great brown stick insect or the great brown phasma and live in Cypress trees, where they feed off the leaves and mimic the branches to hide from animals and birds that might eat them.

Lakes Aquarium marketing manager Cathy Burrows said: "Our animals and fish can teach families so much about the natural world and the clever adaptations that creatures make in order to survive."

In related news, holidays in the Lake District were recently chosen as the second most popular in Britain in a recent poll conducted by satellite navigation technology firm Garmin.
